Peoples, Jackson sharp for No. 12 Virginia Tech

Steven Peoples had two fifirst- half touchdown runs, and No. 12 Virginia Tech made quick work of visiting William& Mary in a 62-17 victory Saturday.

Josh Jackson threw for one touchdown and ran for another for the Hokies (2-0), who showed no ill effects after winning 24-3 at Florida State on Monday night. Jackson went to the bench before halftime with the score 31-7, and backup Ryan Willis led a touchdown drive on his fifirst college series.

The FCS-level Tribe ( 1-1) were outgained 401- 100 in the opening 30 minutes, and 71 of their yards came on a pass from Shon Mitchell to Nick Muse, setting up their lone points in the half.

Peoples scored on runs of six and four yards and fifinished with six carries for 55 yards.

Jackson was 12 for 16 for 217yards, including a 39-yard scoring throw to Damon Hazleton. Jackson also ran 8 yards for aTD, and Deshawn McClease’s 1-yard run made it 38- 7 at the half.

(At) Wake Forest 51, Towson 20: Greg Dortch returned two punts for touchdowns and caught a scoring pass for Wake Forest.

Duke 21, (at) Northweste­rn 7: Daniel Jones threw three touchdowns before leaving the game with an apparent injury, and Duke beat Northweste­rn.

(At) Boston College 62, Holy Cross 14: AJ Dillon ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns in less than a quarter, and Boston College beat old, in-state rival Holy Cross in the schools’ first meeting in 32 years.

(At) East Carolina 41, North Carolina 19: Freshman quarterbac­k Holton Ahlers ran for two of East Carolina’s four rushing touch downs while Reid Herring threw for another score.

(At) Syracuse 62, Wagner 10: Eric Dungey tied a school record by tossing five touchdown passes to pace Syracuse University to a rout of Wagner in its home opener.
