I want to make a cake for a Halloween party and the recipe calls for sugar sheets as decorations. This is my first attempt at this type of cake, I’m not a baker at all, and I want to make a practice cake and follow the directions to the letter. Where would I get black sheets of sugar? We moved into a mid-’80s home about two years ago that has a charming powder room floor. Unfortunately, a handful of the little dime-sized pieces that comprise the flooring have come unglued and have been swallowed up in the vacuum. Matching exact tile from more than 30 years ago isn’t going to be easy. However, the good news is that your tile — called penny tile — is back in style. From your photo, the color looks like variegated shades of beige and brown with a dark ring around each tile. I found Merola Tile Hudson penny round in the color Truffle that comes in 12-inch square sheets. The color looks similar to yours, but it might be slightly lighter, it does have the dark rings around each tile like yours. Hudson penny round tiles also come in a slighter darker color, with the rings around each tile, and that color is called Caffe. Because photos vary from the actual product, I would suggest you order both colors. I checked with Merola Tile and found that you could go to the website, www.merolatile.com or call 800-963-7652, and order tile samples for $14.95 for four samples. Although the tile is available to order from Home Depot, a box of fullsize sheets of the tiles in Caffe costs $109, and no samples are available from the store. Strangely enough, the color Truffle is available to order in individual sheets for $9.98 each. To order the samples from Merola Tile, use product number FKOMPR71 for Truffle and FKOMPR73 for Caffe.
I hope you can help me find Red Gold diced tomatoes with basil, garlic and oregano. These are my favorite tomatoes to use as a base for spaghetti sauce, but they’re not always easy to find. — M. Garcia, Atlanta
