Yankees shortstop Gregorius sidelined until next summer

-

Yankees star shortstop Didi Gregorius needs Tommy John surgery on his right elbow after injuring himself making a throw in Boston during the AL Division Series, and there’s no telling exactly when he’ll be able to play again.

General manager Brian Cashman said Friday that Gregorius will be out “until sometime next summer.” Cashman said the team will have a better idea about his return after surgery, which hasn’t yet been scheduled.

Second baseman Gleyber Torres is the Yankees’ top internal solution at shortstop, Cashman said.

NFL: Carson Wentz threw a season-high three touchdown passes and the Eagles (3-3) got an early lift from their defense and special teams in beating the struggling Giants 34-13 on Thursday night, avoiding their first three-game losing streak since the 2016 season. Rookie halfback Saquon Barkley scored on a 50-yard run and rushed for 130 yards in one of the few bright spots for the Giants (1-5).

■ The Jaguars have signed former offensive tackle Ereck Flowers and placed left tackle Josh Wells on injured reserve with a groin injury. Flowers was waived by the Giants on Tuesday after he failed to live up to lofty expectations as the ninth overall pick in the 2015 draft.

■ Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Bears with a throwing shoulder injury that first bothered him last month. Tannehill was limited in Friday’s workout — the first time he has missed practice time because of the injury. Brock Osweiler or David Fales would start Tannehill can’t play.

■ The injury-plagued Falcons will be without defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (ankle) and running back Devonta Freeman (foot) on Sunday against the Bucs.

■ Receiver DeAnthony Thomas broke a leg during practice and could miss the rest of the season, the latest in a string of injuries to befall the unbeaten Chiefs.

■ Browns rookie receiver Derrick Willies broke his collarbone in practice Friday and will miss Sunday’s game against the Chargers and likely several more.

Golf: Gary Woodland shot an 11-under 61 to tie the course record and join Marc Leishman (62) in a share of the second-round lead at 14 under in the PGA Tour’s CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Shubhankar Sharma (64) and Paul Casey (65) were tied for third, one stroke behind. Firstround leader Bronson Burgoon shot 69 and was two strokes behind, tied with fellow Americans Scott Piercy (67) and Austin Cook (68).

■ Eddie Pepperell moved into a three-stroke clubhouse lead and Tommy Fleetwood lost ground at the British Masters outside London. World No. 2 Justin Rose made it through to the weekend but was 10 strokes off the pace.

■ Bernhard Langer birdied nine of the last 10 holes at rain-softened Prestonwood for a 10-under 62 and share of lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ SAS Championship in Cary, N.C. Tom Lehman and Gene Sauers matched the 61-year-old Langer.

■ No. 1-ranked Sung Hyun Park and No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn were among four sharing the lead after two rounds of the KEB Hana Bank Championship in South Korea.
