Author talk: Tony Grooms, author and professor of creative writing and director of the master of arts in profession­al writing program at Kennesaw State University, will speak about his latest book, “The Vain Conversati­on,” which was inspired by actual events and focuses on the question of redemption for racial crimes. Community lecture: Greg Garrett, author and professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, will present on the topic, “Living with the Living Dead: What Zombies Can Teach Us About Life, Community and Hope” using popular zombie apocalypse narratives. Guests will be challenged to think about how to navigate terrifying situations, forming communitie­s, ethical decisions and ways in which faith can simultaneo­usly encourage fearless and humble responses. Garrett’s presentati­on will be the annual Jane Baird Lecture, an annual appointmen­t in honor of former Cathedral Book Store manager Jane Baird. 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
