Barbecue spot fails inspection

The Kennesaw location of an international chain barbecue franchise failed its recent health inspection, according to Cobb County health department records.

The Dickey’s Barbecue Pit at 1610 Ridenour Boulevard scored a 65 on Monday. Any score below a 70 is considered failing.

Dickey’s started in Dallas in 1941 and now boasts 500 locations across the world; it opened a restaurant in Au Dhabi earlier this month.

Issues with flies and a dirty kitchen along with expired sauces and salad dressings were part of the failing score in Cobb.

“We were shocked because basically there was not really any issue she pointed out that was extreme from when we were last inspected,” store owner Randy Schoening told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday. That last score was a 91 in April. During this health check, the inspector found a “heavy accumulation of food debris, food crumbs and grease stains still left on the equipment” throughout many items in the kitchen.

Schoening said those have been cleaned.

As for the flies throughout the kitchen, the back door was propped open. Schoening said the door was open because they were taking a delivery.

“We’re addressing all issues immediately and expect to have an excellent score” when the inspector comes back, he said.

Follow-up inspections are usually done within 10 days of the original evaluation.
