Magic. Augusta Wheeler mulled it over for a few weeks and decided that’s the word that represents her home.
Then in “one fell swoop,” she said, she spray-painted in pink the word on a canvas that she found on the side of a road. And hocus-pocus, she had instant art above the couch in the living room, which also has a cabinet painted in a jungle green and a black-and-white coffee table that resembles piano keys.
Wheeler, who often posts her DIY projects and bohemian decor on Instagram (@thethriftyhippie), said she channels a classic video game in her decorating habits.
“I love changing things around,” she said. “I play Tetris in my house all the time with the furniture.”

Bold hues blend in the decor, which homeowner Augusta Wheeler, whose Instagram account is @thethriftyhippie, describes as bohemian and fearless.
Musical influences and instruments, such as the organ, are key elements in the home. But the faux fireplace, painted dramatic black and pink, is one of Augusta Wheeler’s favorite elements. She found it at a yard sale and has it in her dining room. “I just keep repainting it for whatever my vibe is,” she said.
Augusta Wheeler said she tests the waters for her painted pieces in progress by posting them on Instagram (@thethriftyhippie) and getting followers’ feedback. The china cabinet is painted Valspar’s Northern Hemisphere.
Some items in the home were swapped with friends, such as the swing chair. The homeowner said she traded carpet for it. Now it’s in the kids’ bedroom.
