Abrams won Cobb; a look at the vote

- By Ben Brasch ben.brasch@ajc.com

Much is unknown about the super-tight, super-energized Georgia races of Tuesday. But here’s what we do k now: Democrat Stacey Abrams won Cobb County.

She got about 30,000 more votes than Republi- can Brian Kemp in Cobb, and the county voted Democratic in every statewide race.

If you’re a more recent Cobb voter, that may not be a surprise, considering Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump in Cobb by 6,800 votes during the 2016 presidential race.

But if you’ve been using the Big Chicken in your direc- tions for years, this still may be surprising.

Cobb is classically red territory. Before Clinton, the last Democrat to win the county was Georgia’s Jimmy Carter in 1976. The county has made for fertile GOP grounds in terms of support and cash over the years. And Cobb is worth fighting for, with 13.78 percent of the state’s 10.3 mil- lion residents, according to Census data from July 2016.

Like much of metro Atlanta, Cobb’s population is growing and changing.
