Rivera, Halladay among ballot rookies

Career saves leader Mariano Rivera and late pitcher Roy Halladay are among 20 new candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot for the Baseball Writers’ Associatio­n of America, joined by 15 holdovers headed by Edgar Martinez. Left-hander Andy Pettitte and infielders Todd Helton, Michael Young and Miguel Tejada also are newcomers on the ballot announced Monday. Steroid-era stars Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds each appear on the ballot for the seventh time.

More than 400 ballots are being sent to eligible voters from the BBWAA, and a player must receive at least 75 percent for election. Results will be announced Jan. 22.

Players stay on the ballot for up to 10 years if they receive at least 5 percent of the vote annually. Martinez and ex-Braves first baseman Fred McGriff are on the ballot for the final time. Other holdovers include Andruw Jones and Gary Sheffield.

The suit also names Adidas associates James Gatto, Merl Code, Christian Dawkins, Munish Sood, Thomas Gassnola and Christophe­r Rivers. Gatto, Code and Dawkins were found guilty last month in a federal trial. Sood and Gassnola were witnesses at the trial after pleading guilty.
