Villanova, Syracuse tumble out of Top 25

While top-ranked Duke and No. 2 Kansas did little to hurt their status as early national title contenders, reigning national champion Villanova and Syracuse slid all the way out of the AP Top 25 on Monday. The Wildcats lost a rematch of last year’s championsh­ip game with Michigan, then lost in overtime to Furman to give coach Jay Wright’s team back-to-back losses for the first time in five years. The top five remained unchanged with Duke the clear No. 1.

Lawsuit: Ex-Louisville and South Carolina player Brian Bowen II sued Adidas and several associates caught up in a corruption scandal alleging federal racketeeri­ng violations that cost him the chance to develop his game.

Bowen’s lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in South Carolina. It asks for unspecifie­d damages and says Bowen and other players targeted by Adidas’ “criminal racketing

Boxing: Manny Pacquiao announced a Jan. 19 defense of his WBA welterweig­ht belt vs. Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Broner, from Cincinnati, is 33-3-1 with 24 knockouts.

Soccer: Spain wants Morocco to join a three-country bid with Portugal to host the 2030 World Cup, a Spanish government spokeswoma­n said. South American leaders are already promoting a three-way bid by Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

Olympics: Calgary’s bid to hold the 2026 Winter Olympics is over. The City Council voted Monday to end the bid. Stockholm and a joint Italian bid from Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo are still in the running for 2026.
