County designates house as historic

The Hill-Crowe-White House at 2419 Old Lost Mountain Road was placed on the Cobb County Register of Historic Places on Nov. 27 by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

The owners, A. E. and Sue White, requested the nomination of their house to this register.

The Cobb Historic Preservation Commission voted on Nov. 12 to recommend to the commissioners that this house be designated as historic and added to the register.

This property is “an excellent example of a New South Cottage” and “has historic significance as a representativeof Cobb County’s agricultural heritage,” according to the resolution.

One of 25 New South Cottages now in Cobb County, the house - originally built as a farmhouse for a working 60-acre farm that remained in two connected families for more than 70 years - sits on 1.4 acres on Old Lost Mountain Road at Gaydon Road.

“The potato house is also an excellent example of an ancillary use that adds to the historical relevance of the house.”

During the Great Depression, the house is an example of efforts at the national level to assist longterm tenant farmers to become successful landowners - in this case, the Crowes.

In 1939, the Crowe family made several improvements followed by more improvements by the Whites in 1988 and 2006.

The commissioners’ 5-0 vote protects this property as a historic resource and freezes the property taxes for 10 years. CAROLYN CUNNINGHAM FOR THE AJC
