New designation of state routes approved

The Lawrenceville City Council voted Dec. 3 to re-designate State Routes 8, 120, 20, 29 and 124 off of Pike and Crogan Streets in the Downtown District. The highly trafficked state routes will be moved to roads that by-pass the downtown area in favor of a more walkable downtown district.

City Manager Chuck Warbington stated, “We have simply redirected the State Routes away from our downtown. This encourages a reduction in freight traffic and pass through traffic in our immediate downtown and will create a more pedestrian friendly environment for that area. This isn’t a construction project and no roads are changing, only the directional signage of these State Routes.”

All the proposed state route changes will flow around downtown via Jackson Street on the East and North end and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road on the West and South end. The city is working jointly with Gwinnett DOT and Georgia DOT to implement the re-designations.

GDOT will make the necessary signage adjustments to reroute traffic following those state routes down the alternate roads. A map showing the changes is available at www.lawrencevillega.org.

NORCROSS

design a mid-block crossing on Tech Drive between Indian Trail Road and Singleton Road. The mid-block crossing, identified as a potential project through the Livable Centers Initiative 10-year update, is located between two Gwinnett Transit stops on Tech Drive, which serve as transfer points for riders. The mid-block crossing will increase safety for transit users by creating a protected place to cross.

In addition, as part of the project, Gateway85 and Gwinnett are planning to relocate the bus stops to a location on Tech Drive which will further improve safety by increasing visibility for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

This project is being funded by Gateway85 and the CID is responsible for managing all phases of the project.
