Smith reportedly battling infection

The Redskins asked for privacy for Alex Smith and his family amid reports the quarterbac­k is dealing with complicati­ons from surgery to repair a broken leg.

In a statement Thursday, the team says it appreciate­s concerns about Smith’s injury that occurred Nov. 18 against Houston and that the 34-year-old and his family remain strong. NFL Network and a Washington radio station reported that Smith is still battling infection in his leg more than two weeks after surgery to repair a broken right tibia and fibula.

■ Reuben Foster’s ex-girlfriend tells ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he slapped her and pushed her during an incident in Tampa, Florida, that led to his arrest for domestic violence. Elissa Ennis said in the interview televised Thursday that Foster abused her three times, most recently last month in Tampa. The 24-year-old Foster was charged with one count of first-degree misdemeano­r domestic violence.

The 49ers released Foster after the incident, and the Redskins claimed the second-year linebacker. Foster was put on the Commission­er Exempt list, which means he cannot play or practice.

Golf: Louis Oosthuizen led the South African Open by a shot after a 9-under 62 in the first round. Oosthuizen, playing his home Open for the first time in eight years, led American Kurt Kitayama, who won the Mauritius Open last weekend, and surprise challenger Madalitso Muthiya of Zambia.

Tennis: Amelie Mauresmo won’t be captaining France’s Davis Cup team after all because the two-time major winner is going back to coaching to help 32nd-ranked Frenchman Lucas Pouille.
