Even Scrooge could enjoy these holidays

- By Shelia M. Poole spoole@ajc.com

OK, we get it.

Not everyone is a jolly, “ho-hoho” kind of person.

Ugly Christmas sweaters aside, the holidays can mean shopping headaches and heaping servings of stress.

Still, you can find lots of things to do around the holiday season for the Scrooge in your life.

Here are a few suggestions for activities in the coming weeks, and yes, some will include the word Christmas, but you’ll probably have fun anyway.

‘Celtic Christmas’

Enjoy traditional and newer songs as performers provide powerful music, dance and drama during the “Celtic Christmas” Dec. 15-16 at the Rialto Center for the Arts.

Joe Craven and Jesse Edgerton appear as “Raven and Edgy,” two lost souls forever on a search for the true meaning of Christmas.

Other guests include Scottish fiddlers Suzanne Harner and Adam Bern and Scottish Highland piper Neil Womelduff.

Olivia Bradley, a young singer in the Irish Gaelic tradition, will also perform.

And it just wouldn’t be “Celtic Christmas” (darn it, we used that word again) without other performances, including the guitar work of Dublin’s native son John Doyle; Leah Calvert, the Rosin Sisters, the Buddy O’Reilly Band featuring vocalist Lisa Edwards, and the Glencoe School of Scottish Highland Dance.

8 p.m. Dec. 15 and 3 p.m. Dec. 16. $16-$75. Rialto Center for the Arts, 80 Forsyth St. NW, Atlanta. 404-413-9849, rialto.gsu.edu.

Comedian Don “DC” Curry

Funnyman Don “DC” Curry will bring the laughs Dec, 13-16 at the Uptown Comedy Corner in Hapeville.

Curry, a writer and actor, is known for his work as Uncle Elroy Jones in “Next Friday” and “Friday After Next” and for his role on the sitcom “Grace Under Fire.”

Curry has been doing standup comedy for more than three decades, getting his start during open mic nights.

Here’s something you may not know, though. Curry played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers for a year, according to

the Birmingham Times. A PK (preacher’s kid), Curry said in the article that he has been told his comedic delivery style is similar to a preacher’s.

Various times Dec. 13-16. $15-$450. Uptown Comedy Corner, 397 N. Central Ave., Hapeville. 404-768-0483, uptowncomedy.net.

Book signing

Atlanta native Linton C. Hopkins will discuss and sign copies of his book, “East Lake: Where Bobby Learned to Play,” at the Atlanta His- tory Center on Dec. 16.

The book takes the reader back in time to introduce Bobby Jones and Alexa Stir- ling, who later changed the world of golf.

Readers will meet four of Jones’ other friends and learn about each hole of the modern Tour Championship course with them.

Woven into the narrative are personal essays by the golfer’s law partners and oth- ers inspired by him, including a one-time visitor who wrote a mystery story about his round of golf. The beau- tifully illustrated book also tells the history of East Lake and emphasizes the transfor- mative work of Tom Cousins in the neighborhood, which has become a model adopted by other cities.

The program is followed with a reception, book signing, and exploration of “Fair Play: The Bobby Jones Story” exhibition.

4p .m. Dec. 16. $10 for general public, $5 for members. Atlanta History Center, 130 W. Paces Ferry Road NW, Atlanta. 404-814-4000, atlan- tahistorycenter.com.
