Why was the body of The Washington Post columnist who was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul dismembered? — ANDY SIMS, DOUGLASVILLE
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar in mid-November said one possibility is that the corpse was dismembered and taken out of the country in luggage “without facing problems due to their diplomatic immunity,” according to his comments at an international conference in Canada, which were broadcast by CNN Turk, according to media reports.
Arrests were issued recently for Ahmed al-Assiri and Saud al-Qahtani in the death of Jamal Khashoggi. The two men, who are former aides to the Saudi crown prince, were believed to be part of a 15-man team involved in the killing, according to The Associated Press.
“The Turks have said that Mr. Khashoggi’s body was cut up by an autopsy specialist with a bone saw before being carried out of the consulate in large suitcases and disposed of in an unknown location, perhaps a forest,” according to a report in The New York Times. The story notes that a Saudi official said “the team handed over Mr. Khashoggi’s body to a local ‘collaborator’ to dispose.”
