DAILY BRIDGE CLUB:

- BY FRANK STEWART

“I was Christmas shopping online,” Rose told me, “and looked at some Amazon product reviews. Someone posted a negative review of a Bic pen, saying it worked fine when he wrote with his right hand but terrible with his left.”

When you’re declarer, your right-hand opponent may be “dangerous”: You don’t want him in the lead. Left-hand opponent may be “safe.” At 3NT, you win the first heart in dummy. If East wins an early trick and returns a heart, West can set up his suit, and you may go down. East is dangerous.

If you lead a diamond to your hand and pass the nine of clubs, you fail. East takes the queen and leads a heart, and you have only eight tricks.

Try leading a low club from dummy at Trick Two. East could prevail by putting up the queen (!) to return a heart, but if he plays low, West takes the ace and can’t lead another heart effectively. South wins any return and leads the king and a third club. He has two clubs, two spades, two hearts and four diamonds.

DAILY QUESTION: You hold: ♠ Q95 ♥ K9763

◆ 842 ♣ A 7. The dealer, at your left, opens one spade. Your partner doubles, you respond two hearts and he bids three diamonds. What do you say?

ANSWER: Partner has a strong hand and a good diamond suit. He has committed your side to a ninetrick contract, and he can’t know that you have any strength. Don’t pass. Bid 3NT, four diamonds or four hearts.
