City to require specific refuse containers

Roswell residents must use the garbage and recycling containers provided to them and none others for the city’s new semi-automated, curbside household garbage container program, according to proposed amendments to city ordinance.

The City Council accepted on first reading the amendments to the Utilities and Services ordinance. A second reading and vote is scheduled for Jan. 14.

Every residence will be provided with a household garbage container sufficient for seven days of trash (one container for standard service, two for premium service); and, upon request, a recycling container for curbside collection of approved recyclables, the measure says.

“It is unlawful to place garbage or recycling for collection in a box, tub, crate or container that is not provided by the city,” the amended ordinance says.

Curbside collection of more than five large items like furniture and appliances must be approved by the environmental/public works director or his or her designee. Additional fees may apply.

As for commercial customers, the measure states that if a commercial garbage container is placed in a location other than that directed by the city or if access is blocked or obstructed, the container will not be emptied.
