Where Can I Find It?

Where can I find it?

- By Sabine Morrow

Chocolate icebox cookies, Mary Jane candy and Lowensenf hot mustard,

Our family tradition is to have icebox cookies after Christmas Eve dinner. I’m almost 70 and since I was a little girl, I thought that the icebox cookie recipe was a family secret. Thirty years ago, I realized the recipe was on the box! Anyway, the wafers used are Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers. I have been to four stores and the one that said it had them was out of stock and did not know when it was getting them. I went to Amazon and they were $25 for ONE box. Has Nabisco discontinued this wonderful product? It’s too late for this Christmas, but I’ll stock up if they can be found. Love your column! Thank you. — L. Massey, Lilburn

From your icebox cookies to another reader’s pie crust and cheesecake base, these crunchy wafers have been sorely missed this holiday season. I reached out to Publix and discovered that the chocolate wafers had been discontinued by the manufacturer. Since the manufacturer discontinued the cookies, Publix didn’t have a way to special order them. I contacted Nabisco and was told that the Famous Chocolate Wafers were temporarily unavailable because they’re “showing signs of rancidity, including a possible off-taste/odor.” The product was pulled in September. However, I did hear from Nabisco again and was told that the cookies were on their way back. The folks at Publix let me know that the company warehouse was going to get a limited supply of the cookies and that you should check with your store’s manager to see if you could get some boxes sent to a store nearest you.

Where can I get Mary Jane candy? And what’s the cost? — Ralph Rhyme, Snellville

For fans of this chewy, peanuty candy, I have this advice: buy it while you can. Technically, Mary Jane candy is discontinued. It was owned by the Necco company, which was sold to Spangler Candy this fall. However, Spangler only purchased Necco wafers, Sweethearts and Canada Mints — not Mary Jane. There’s no word, yet, whether Mary Jane was bought by another company or if they’re destined to be a culinary memory. Mary Jane candy in a 2.5ounce theater box, $2.49, is available at Rocket Fizz, 115 Clairemont Ave., Decatur, 404-565-0156. You can still get a few loose candies for 15 cents each near the registers at Intown Ace Hardware, 1404 Scott Blvd., Decatur, 404-378-6006.

I’m looking for a German mustard called Lowensenf extra-hot. Help, please. Thanks. — Mike Kapfer, Buford

Lowensenf extra-hot mustard in the curvy 9-ounce glass jar is available for $3.99 at Cost Plus World Market, 4733 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, 678-7310014. Note that while most Cost Plus stores stock this mustard, it wasn’t available at the one nearest you when I checked. Created in 1920 in Dusseldorf Germany, Lowensenf is one of the country’s most popular mustards. By the way, Lowensenf translates to lion’s mustard in German. Having trouble finding a particular item?
