Birrell sworn in to third term as Cobb commission­er

She has worked with many community organizati­ons.

Cobb County District 3 Commission­er JoAnn Birrell took the oath of office for her third term on Dec. 19 at Pied- mont Church in Marietta.

The event occurred in conjunctio­n with Northeast Cobb Business Associatio­n’s December luncheon.

Birrell, a 23-year resident of the county, previously has served in numerous community organizati­ons, including as past chair of Keep Cobb Beautiful and the Neighbor- hood Safety Commission.

During her first term, Bir- rell initiated the Keep It In Cobb Program and establishe­d the Canton Road Rede- velopment Committee.

She also worked with county staff to change the purchasing ordinance to include a local vendor pres- ence clause and launch the How to Do Business With Cobb seminars, where busi- ness owners can learn how to become a vendor with the county and meet county representa­tives who make purchasing decisions.

During her second term, Birrell continued to work on revitaliza­tion and economic developmen­t opportunit­ies, according to her county website page.

Of the 17 redevelopm­ent sites in District 3, only three sites remain on the list.

Birrell co-chaired the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus concert at Lassiter Concert Hall on Veterans Day.

With financial assistance from Superior Plumbing, she also launched Superior Pets For Patriotic Vets to pair homeless Cobb County Animal Shelter pets with military veterans.

In 2018, Birrell was on the steering committee to honor Vietnam Veterans on the 50th Anniversar­y in Cobb.

She also served as a board member of the McCleskey/ East Cobb YMCA from 201215.

Currently, Birrell serves on the board of the Lance Corporal Skip Wells Foundation in memory of Wells.
