G-DAY SCRIMMAGE SET FOR APRIL 20 IN ATHENS

- AJC Staff and DawgNation

Georgia’s annual intrasquad game of the spring — known as G-Day — will be held Saturday, April 20 at Sanford Stadium, according to the UGA Alumni Association. A time for the game was not announced.

More than 80,000 attended last year’s scrimmage at a revamped Sanford Stadium. It was aired on ESPN. The G-Day attendance record of 93,000 was set in 2016 — Kirby Smart’s first season in Athens.

Hartley to coach tight ends: Todd Hartley, a Georgia graduate and former member of the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, was announced as Georgia’s new tight ends coach Monday. He comes back to UGA from the University of Miami, where he served as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. The native of Gray, Ga., graduated from Georgia in 2008 and was a student assistant with the Bulldogs from 2005-08.

All eyes on Georgia-Notre Dame: Georgia fans have circled the Sept. 21 game against Notre Dame for a while, given Georgia’s uninspiring 2018 nonconference slate and the thrilling 2017 game between the two schools, which Georgia won 20-19. It seems the rest of the college football world will also be very interested in the game.

ESPN’s Andrea Adelson ranked the Georgia-Notre Dame clash as the No. 1 nonconference matchup in 2019, ahead of games like LSU-Texas, Clemson-Texas A&M and Auburn-Oregon. Another reason for the added emphasis on the game, Adelson writes, is because of what Georgia players tweeted about Notre Dame during the College Football Playoff: the opinion that they belonged in the playoff over Notre Dame, which lost 30-3 to Clemson.

“The trash-talk coming from Georgia players via Twitter ... makes this Week 4 matchup between the Irish and Bulldogs must-see TV,” Adelson wrote.

Both teams figure to enter with high rankings. Georgia comes in at No. 3 in ESPN’s “way-too-early” Top 25 for 2019 and Notre Dame, which brings back QB Ian Book but does lose a number of key players on defense, ranks No. 5.

The Notre Dame game will be Georgia’s fourth of the season, after opening on the road against Vanderbilt on Aug. 31 and hosting Murray State and Arkansas State.

Georgia baseball in top 10: The Bulldogs baseball team ranks No. 9 in the country in D1baseball’s preseason poll, one of eight SEC teams in the top 25, including No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 LSU. Georgia starts its season on Feb. 15, hosting Dayton for a three-game series.
