Morgan County climbs to No. 1 in Class AAA

Morgan County is the new No. 1 girls basketball team in Class AAA after Beach, the previous No. 1, lost to Johnson-Savannah on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs beat Franklin County 60-46 and Salem 65-24 during the week to improve to 14-3 and increase their winning streak to seven games. Morgan County is 6-0 in Region 8-AAA, a half-game ahead of second-ranked Jefferson, and meets No. 5 Hart County today in another key region matchup. The Bulldogs lost to Haralson County in the second round of the playoffs last year but were semifinalists in 2017 and state champions in 2016.

Johnson, the defending state champion, moved up two spots to No. 3 on the strength of its 55-42 victory against Beach, which dropped to No. 4. The two Savannah schools have met in the state finals the past two years, with each team winning once. The teams have split their two meetings this season. Beach won 55-53 in overtime Nov. 27.
