Facebook said Thursday it removed hundreds of Russia-linked pages, groups and accounts that it says were part of two big disinforma­tion operations, in its latest effort to fight fake news. The social media company said it took action after finding two networks “that engaged in coordinate­d inauthenti­c behavior” on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Journalist killed:

Police in Ghana say an investigat­ive journalist whose work exposing corruption in African soccer led to the downfall of a member of the sport’s high-powered FIFA Council was shot dead by gunmen on a motorbike.

Ali honored:

Louisville is naming its airport after Muhammad Ali, who famously hated flying. “I’m not afraid of the fight, ”he told reporters before a 1961 bout. “I’m afraid of the flight. ”As the Louisville Courier-Journal reported, Mayor Greg Fischer said Louisville Muhammad Ali Internatio­nal Airport would serve as a reminder that while the boxer belonged to the world, the Kentucky city was his home.

Vanguard founder dies:

John C. “Jack” Bogle, who revolution­ized American investment with his invention of the index fund, died Wednesday in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvan­ia. He was 89. The announceme­nt was made by the Malvern, Pennsylvan­ia-based Vanguard Group, the $5 trillion mutual fund organizati­on he founded in 1974. No cause of death was reported. He had been diagnosed with an erratic heartbeat as a young man, had his first of six heart attacks at 31 and underwent a heart transplant at 66.
