1 Google fined: Google has been fined nearly $57 million by French regulators for violating Europe’s tough new data-privacy rules, marking the first major penalty brought against a U.S. technology giant since the region-wide regulation­s took effect last year. France’s top data-privacy said Google failed to fully disclose to users how their personal informatio­n is collected and what happens to it.

2 Winter weather: A major winter storm followed by bitter cold blanketed a wide swath of the country in snow, sleet and rain, creating dangerousl­y icy conditions that promise to complicate cleanup efforts and disrupt travel. In New England, temperatur­es could fall to as low as 20 below zero around Boston and as low as 35 below zero in parts of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.

3 Comic book arrest: A few comic books from a stolen Batman collection worth $1.4 million have been recovered after an arrest in Arizona. News station ABC-15 in Phoenix reports that police charged Phillip Weisbauer of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, with theft and traffickin­g in stolen property after he tried to sell four comic books. Those items alone are valued at nearly $100,000, part of a collection of nearly 450 comic books stolen from a storage unit.

4 Prince warned: Days after Prince Philip was involved in a car crash thatinjure­d two women and prompted a debate on older drivers in Britain, the police gave him a warning after he was photograph­ed driving in another vehicle — this time apparently without a seatbelt. After news outlets published a photo of the 97-year-old duke behind the wheel of a Land Rover outside a property of the royal family, police followed up.“Suitable words of advice have been given to the driver,” a police spokesman said.

5 Tornadoes hit: Homes, businesses and churches were among the buildings badly damaged or demolished when tornadoes struck central Alabama over the weekend. The severe weather hit Saturday and another tornado was reported later that evening at an air base in the Florida Panhandle. On Sunday, the National Weather Service says its initial surveys indicated there was an EF 1 tornado in Autauga County, and a stronger EF2 twister in Wetumpka, Alabama.
