Morehouse professor hailed for babysitting student’s child in class

- Eric Stirgus

A few weeks ago, Wayne Hayer, a senior at Morehouse College, told his professor he couldn’t stay for office hoursbecause he had to pick up his infant daughter.

The professor, Nathan Alexander, suggested that Hayer bring his daughter to class.

To Alexander’s surprise, that’s exactly what Hayer did: On Friday, he dressed his 5-month-old daughter, Asada, in a onesie, a pink sweater and a hat, and packed her blanket in his backpack. With her strapped to his chest, he left his apartment and made his way to campus.

“I had a book bag on and a baby strapped to my chest. I looked crazy,” he said. As he approached the classroom door, Hayer felt intimidated. “Then Dr. Alexander saw me and welcomed me with open arms.”

But the story doesn’t end there. At the beginning of the 50-minute lecture, Alexander noticed that Hayer was distracted watching his daughter and offered to hold her.

“Hey, I’ll take her so you can take some good notes,” recalled Alexander, who rocked the child with his left hand and lectured with his right hand.

The Friday algebra class would soon become a momentshared across the Internet.

Asada was quiet through the class and fell asleep near the end of Alexander’s lecture.

“My lecture must be getting boring,” Alexander joked.
