Knitters to ‘yarn bomb’ mature trees

A group of volunteers is launching a unique initiative to add a splash of color to trees at Smyrna’s Arboretum and Pond.

Participants are sought to take part in a “yarn bomb” of trees organized by members of the Smyrna Tree Board. Chris Zweifel, a volunteer with the board, said each participant will be assigned to a tree and they will knit a scarf that would wrap around its trunk.

Project organizers have identified about 20 trees they would like to adorn with scarves and, judging by the response he’s received, Zweifel said he’s optimistic about how many people will participate.

The city arborist told organizers they can only decorate mature trees, and the scarves should be placed no higher than six feet. Zweifel said the scarves will remain in place for two to three months. Zweifel said he hopes to have the scarves in place before Smyrna’s Aug. 3 birthday celebration.

“We want to celebrate trees in Smyrna, and just show that they play an important role in our community,” Zweifel added.

Shaun Martin, a member of the Smyrna Tree Board, added she hopes the project will also educate residents about the importance of protecting trees in the community.

“It’s something, no pun intended, where we are stitching together the community and embracing our trees in a new and exciting way,” she said.
