Makeup recall:
The retailer Claire’s is recalling three makeup products after U.S. regulators warned they might contain asbestos. The FDA said product samples tested positive for asbestos but that Claire’s refused to recall any products that might still be in homes. The retailer disputed the results but said it removed the products from stores.
Not so fast:
JohnsHopkins University, a thriving private research institution with one of the world’s foremost medical schools, wants to create an armed police force similar to those patrolling numerous other U.S. colleges and universities. But in its home city of Baltimore, split by deep divisions and seared by years of discriminatory policing, it’s not going to happen easily.
Murder conviction:
Massachusetts’ highest court on Wednesday reinstated the late Aaron Hernandez’s murder conviction, which was erased after the former NFL star killed himself in prison. The Supreme Judicial Court also scrapped the legal principle that wiped out Hernandez’s conviction for future cases, calling it “outdated and no longer consonant with the circumstances of contemporary life.”
Looting:
Venezuela’s largest private food supplier says massive looting and vandalism occurred at four facilities in the city of Maracaibo during nationwide power outages, complicating efforts to distribute food and drinks to people in the area.
Dim outlook:
Ohio’s governor said Wednesday it seems clear that General Motors isn’t planning on making a new line of vehicles at its assembly plant in the state. The plant near Youngstown that shut down last week is one of five factories GM wants to close by next January.
