THE HOT CORNER

-

1 MARLINS: Miami had the worst record in the National League going into Thursday’s game at home against Walker Buehler (102, 3.08 ERA) and the Dodgers. It appears headed to its second straight last-place finish under CEO Derek Jeter, who isn’t ready to say whether manager — and former Yankees teammate — Don Mattingly will return next season. Mattingly is in the final year of a four-year contract.“To be fair to Donnie, it’s something we need to talk about sooner rather than later,”Jeter said.“There are a lot of things that go into it. Donnie has done a good job.”

2 ANGELS: Slugger Albert Pujols had two hits and three RBIs Wednesday and set the major league record for career hits by a foreign-born player, leading the Angels to a 7-4 victory over the Pirates. Pujols had an RBI single in the fourth inning. His 3,167th hit moved him past fellow Dominican Republic native Adrian Beltre (3,166) and into sole possession of 15th place for career hits.

3 DODGERS: An additional day of rest helped Clayton Kershaw to one of his most dominant outings of the season. Kershaw struck out the first seven batters he faced and matched a season high with 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings as Los Angeles beat the Marlins 9-1 on Wednesday night.

4 ASTROS: Right-hander Gerrit Cole underwent tests on his right hamstring in Chicago after being scratched at the last minute from a start in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Cole experienced discomfort in his leg while warming up and never took the mound. He said he doesn’t know if he’ll miss his next scheduled start, Monday against Detroit.

5 YANKEES: Left-hander CC Sabathia (inflamed right knee) will come off the injured list and start Sunday against Cleveland.
