Newspaper donates prize: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has donated the $15,000 award for its Pulitzer Prize to help repair the synagogue where 11 people died in a massacre last year. Staffers won the award on April 15 for their coverage of the October shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue.
Vaping illness: State and federal health offifficials investigating mysterious lung illnesses linked to vaping have found the same chemical in samples of marijuana products used by people sickened in different parts of the country and who used different brands of products in recent weeks. The chemical is an oil derived from vitamin E. Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the oil in cannabis products in samples collected from patients who fell ill across the U.S.
American arrested: An American woman who attempted to carry a 6-day-old baby out of the Philippines hidden inside a bag has been arrested at Manila’s airport and charged with human trafficking, officials said. Jennifer Erin Talbot of Utah was able to pass through the airport immigration counter on Wednesday without declaring the baby boy but was intercepted at the boarding gate by airline personnel.
Inmate fifiles suit: A female inmate at a Florida prison is suing the state corrections agency, saying she was left paralyzed after being beaten by four guards. Cheryl Weimar was left with a broken neck and is now a paraplegic because of the guards’ use of force at the Lowell Correctional Institution in Ocala, Florida, according to the lawsuit.
Iran tensions: Iran was poised Thursday to begin work on advanced centrifuges that will enrich uranium faster as the 2015 nuclear deal unravels further and a last-minute French proposal offering a $15 billion line of credit to compensate Iran for not being able to sell its crude oil abroad because of U.S. sanctions looked increasingly unlikely.
