No. 21 Orange routed on road

-

Josh Jackson threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns to anchor another prolific offensive performance by Maryland, which scored 42 first-half points against No. 21 Syracuse in a surprisingly lopsided 63-20 victory on Saturday.

Anthony McFarland Jr. ran for two scores and caught a 6-yard TD pass from Jackson during a sparkling first half in which the host Terrapins amassed 397 yards and built a 29-point lead against a Syracuse team coming off an opening shutout of Liberty.

After beating Howard 79-0 in their first game under coach Mike Locksley, the Terrapins (2-0) came up with an impressive encore against a highly regarded foe.

The 63 points were the most ever by Maryland against a ranked opponent.

(At) Pittsburgh 20, Ohio 10: Kenny Pickett passed for a career-high 321 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown to Maurice Ffrench, to lead Pittsburgh (1-1) past Ohio (1-1).

A week after getting sacked four times and barely completing half of his attempts in a loss to Virginia, Pickett fared far better in his second game trying to run new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple’s pass-heavy offense. Pickett completed 26 of 37 passes and looked far more comfortable against the Bobcats.

Ffrench finished with 10 receptions for 138 yards. His long catch-and-run early in the second quarter gave Pitt (1-0) a 10-point lead the Panthers never came close to squandering. A.J. Davis ran for 89 yards for Pitt and Vincent Davis added 50 on the ground, including his first career touchdown

(At) Virginia Tech 31, Old Dominion 17: Ryan Willis threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Virginia Tech beat Old Dominion.

The Hokies (1-1) avenged a stunning loss to the Monarchs last season, taking a 17-3 first-half lead and responding when Old Dominion (1-1) pulled within a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Willis, who had four turnovers in a season-opening loss at Boston College, and Deshawn McClease each lost a fumble in the closing minutes, but the defense stiffened to give Virginia Tech just its fourth victory in its past 11 games.

Stone Smartt scored on runs of 3 and 15 yards for the Monarchs (1-1), but was helped off the field after a 2-yard run with 5:31 to play.

(At) N.C. State 41, Western Carolina 0: Freshman Zonavan Knight ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries as N.C. State (2-0) rebounded from a slow start to defeat Western Carolina.

The Catamounts (0-2) suffered their 10th straight loss dating to 2018. They were short-handed after suspending four players for the game for violating team policies, including starting quarterback Tyrie Adams, the preseason Southern Conference offensive player of the year.

(At) Boston College 45, Richmond 13: Anthony Brown threw for three touchdowns in the first half, AJ Dillon caught a touchdown pass and ran for two scores and Boston College (2-0) coasted to a nonconference victory.

Brown completed 8 of 14 passes for 163 yards and didn’t throw an interception, backup running back David Bailey had 97 yards on 13 carries, and Dillon finished with 86 yards on 17 attempts.

Late Friday

Wake Forest 41, (at) Rice 21: Jamie Newman was 21 of 27 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Scotty Washington had seven catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns, and the Demon Deacons (2-0) beat the Owls (0-2).

Kenneth Walker III had 125 yards on nine rushes, including a school-record 96-yard touchdown run with 13 minutes left for the Deacons.

(At) Virginia 52, William & Mary 17: Bryce Perkins threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as Virginia took an early 21-0 lead and drubbed the Tribe (1-1).

The Cavaliers (2-0) spoiled the return of former coach Mike London, who was fired after the 2015 season and replaced by Bronco Mendenhall.
