1 Giants: This week’s series at Boston has generated some buzz, with OF Mike Yastrzemski returning to the city where his Hall of Fame grandfather Carl Yastrzemski remains a legend.
“I’ve thought about it, only because I’ve had a lot of calls about it, ”Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, “Am I going to put him in left?” where Yastrzemski’s grandfather played. “That’s pretty cool I’m sure for him and his granddad,” Bochy said.“It’s going to be fun for the fans. It’s a big name there, so it’s going to be exciting.”
2 Diamondbacks: Luke Weaver (4-3, 3.03 ERA) threw two scoreless innings Friday in a rehab assignment in Class A Visalia. The right-hander hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since May 26 because of forearm tightness.
3 Cardinals: A video tribute and a moment of silence was held prior to Friday’s game to honor Chris Duncan who died Sept. 6 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. Duncan played four full seasons with St. Louis from 2006-2009 and had an integral role in the team’s 2006 World Series run.
4 Rays: AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell is tentatively scheduled to start Tuesday at Dodger Stadium. He has been out since late July for elbow surgery but is eager to help the Rays’ push for a playoff spot.
5 Yankees: Manager Aaron Boone said he’s optimistic C Gary Sanchez (strained groin) and DH Edwin Encarnacion (oblique) will be able to return before the end of the season. Both left injured during Thursday’s doubleheader sweep in Detroit . ... LHP J.A. Happ had a cortisone injection in his left biceps muscle and is expected to pitch against the Los Angeles Angels this week.
