Last call: Penn St. holds off Pitt

-

Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi joked before the 100th meeting between the Panthers and 13th-ranked Penn State that the next time the rivals face off, he’ll either be retired or “in a coffin.”

That’s a long time to live with some curious decision-making that helped the Nittany Lions escape with a 17-10 win.

Pitt opted to kick a field goal on fourth-and-goal at the Penn State 1 trailing by a touchdown with less than 4 minutes to go. Alex Kessman’s 19-yard attempt clanked off the upright, and the Nittany Lion defense later turned away Pitt’s lastditch possession to win their third straight in the series since it was renewed in 2016.

Journey Brown ran for 109 yards and a touchdown for Penn State (3-0), and Noah Cain’s 13-yard third-quarter sprint to the end zone gave Penn State the lead for good.

A rivalry that dates to 1893 is going on indefinite hiatus.

(At) West Virginia 44, North Carolina State 27: Austin Kendall threw three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia over North Carolina State.

Kennedy McKoy helped West Virginia’s run game break out of a slump with a pair of scores, and the Mountaineers (2-1) had by far their highest offensive production of the season one week after looking lethargic in a 38-7 loss at Missouri.

Kendall had first-half TD tosses of 20 and 13 yards and went 27 of 40 for 272 yards with an interception.

North Carolina State (2-1) managed just 97 yards of offense in the second half.

(At) Virginia Tech 24, Furman 17: Tre Turner scored second-half touchdowns rushing and receiving, helping Virginia Tech rally past Furman (1-2).

The Hokies (2-1) trailed 14-3 at halftime but scored on their first two possessions of the second half to grab the lead. Turner’s 29-yard touchdown run with 5:04 remaining sealed the win.

Kansas 48, (at) Boston College 24: Kansas coach Les Miles’ return to college football brought him some quick joy. It also brought the Jayhawks something they haven’t had in a long time — a road win at a Power Five school.

Carter Stanley threw for three touchdowns, Khalil Herbert rushed for 187 yards on just 11 carries, and Kan- sas stunned Boston College for its first road win over a Power Five team in nearly 11 years.

The Jayhawks (2-1), who entered as a three-touchdown underdog, won their first road game against a power conference opponent since a victory at Iowa State on Oct. 4, 2008, a span of 48 straight losses.

Pooka Williams ran for 121 yards on 22 attempts with a TD, and Herbert added a late score. Stanley was 20 of 27 for 238 yards with an inception on his first attempt.

AJ Dillon ran for 151 yards on 27 carries for the Eagles (2-1).

(At) Wake Forest 24, North Carolina 18: Jamie Newman came up with a pair of big plays on a clock-draining fourth-quarter drive, helping Wake Forest hold off North Carolina’s comeback bid.

Newman hit Scotty Washington for a 27-yard gain, then had a 4-yard scramble on third down to keep possession to help the Demon Deacons (3-0) take 5 minutes off the clock and add a field goal to a dwindling lead.

UNC (2-1) had a final drive with no timeouts with a chance for a third straight fourth-quarter comeback, but the game ended when Michael Carter didn’t get out of bounds in time on a run.
