THE HOT CORNER

-

1 BASEBALL: There was only one fitting way for a four-game series between the major leagues’ worst teams to end — with no one winning. In the first series in American League history between teams 50 or more games under .500, the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 on Monday night to earn a split. Detroit (45104) has a 3½ game “lead” over Baltimore (49-101) for the top pick in June’s amateur draft, which goes to the club with the lowest winning percentage this season.

2 TRACK AND FIELD: The suspended Russian track federation is sending a team of 29 competitors to the world championships in Qatar, where they will compete as neutral athletes. High jumper Mariya Lasitskene is the only reigning world champion among the group announced by the federation Tuesday. Lasitskene has jumped a world leading 2.06 meters this season but has failed to clear 2 meters at four of her past five events.

3 TENNIS: Fifth-seeded Madison Keys improved her overall record against Daria Kasatkina to 6-0 by beating the Russian 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Pan Pacific Open. Keys converted six of her 10 break points in the match.

4 HOCKEY: The Vancouver Canucks signed restricted free-agent right wing Brock Boeser to a three-year, $17.625 million deal. He posted a photo of himself in a Canucks jersey on Instagram after the deal was announced, with the caption: “Excited to be back, can’t wait to get going! See you soon (hash) cominghome.”

5 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Michigan State offensive lineman Kevin Jarvis is expected to miss 6-7 weeks with a leg injury. Coach Mark Dantonio said Jarvis isn’t lost for the season, but he has been removed from the depth chart after starting the first three games at left tackle.
