Giants decide to sit Manning and start rookie Jones at QB

Eli Manning’s long and distinguished reign as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback is seemingly over. Let the Daniel Jones era begin.

Coach Pat Shurmur announced Tuesday the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft is replacing the twotime Super Bowl MVP as the Giants’ quarterback, beginning Sunday at Tampa Bay.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Shurmur refused to say Manning would remain the starter following two straight losses, the sixth time in seven years New York has gotten off to a 0-2 start.

The 38-year-old Manning has been the team’s starter since replacing Kurt Warner after nine games in the 2004 season, the year Manning was traded to New York by San Diego after it took him with the No. 1 overall pick.

■ PATRIOTS: New England placed left tackle Isaiah Wynn, a former University of Georgia standout, on injured reserve, marking the latest blow to an already injury-riddled offensive line.

Wynn suffered a foot injury in the first quarter of New England’s 43-0 win at Miami on Sunday and did not return to the game. The Patriots filled Wynn’s roster spot Tuesday by signing veteran lineman Caleb Benenoch, who has played in 35 games with 22 starts for Tampa Bay over the past four seasons.

This is the second straight season that Wynn has gone on IR. A preseason Achilles tendon injury caused him to miss his entire rookie season in 2018.

■ PANTHERS: Cam Newton’s status for Sunday’s game at Arizona is uncertain after the 2015 league MVP aggravated a mid-foot sprain.

Newton did not practice Tuesday, and Panthers coach Ron Rivera gave no timetable for his QB’s potential return, saying “He’s going to get his treatment, we’ll see how he feels, and we’ll adjust to it as we go through it.”

Rivera said backup Kyle Allen would make his second career NFL start for the Panthers against Arizona if Newton isn’t able to play.

■ DOLPHINS: General manager Chris Grier says this year’s roster dismantling has been more drastic than he expected, but a turnaround can come quickly because the team will be aggressive in free agency in 2020.

In the wake of the deal that sent disgruntled defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Steelers, no remaining player has asked to be traded, Grier said Tuesday. Team officials tried unsuccessfully to talk Fitzpatrick out of his desire to play elsewhere, Grier said, and the 2018 first-round pick was traded late Monday for a first-round pick in 2020. The Dolphins and Steelers also swapped lower picks.

■ JETS: Quarterback Trevor Siemian is out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury, and Luke Falk will be New York’s starter until Sam Darnold returns from illness. Coach Adam Gase said Tuesday an MRI on Siemian’s left ankle revealed ligament damage that will require surgery.

Siemian was injured in the second quarter of the Jets’ 23-3 loss to the Browns on Monday night when he threw a long incomplete pass and Cleveland’s Myles Garrett slammed into him and fell on top of him — and the Browns defensive end was penalized for roughing the passer.

Falk replaced him and was 20 of 25 for 198 yards in his NFL debut. He will make his first start Sunday at New England.
