Cobb ceremony will honor veterans of Korean War

Korean War veterans are invited to apply to participate in a Certificate of Honor and Peace Medal Ceremony in October in Cobb County to thank them for their military service.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Cobb County Civic Center, 548 S. Marietta Parkway, Marietta.

Oct. 11 is the registration deadline.

This event will include the presentation of the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador for Peace Medal and Georgia’s Korean War Veteran Certificate of Honor.

Every Georgia veteran with honorable service during the Korean War(J une 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953) is eligible to receive this certificate and peace medal lapel pin, including veterans with service in-country and those who were stationed elsewhere in other capacities.

The awards also are available for veterans who participated in the United Nations peacekeeping operations through the end of 1955.

Hosts will be the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta and Georgia Department of Veterans Service (GDVS).

The Ambassador for Peace Medal at first was presented to those American veterans who returned to the Republic of Korea through the “Revisit Program.” Then it was expanded to veterans unable to participate in this program.

The State’s Certificate of Honor is personalized with the Korean War veteran’s name, rank, branch of service and dates of service printed over the Seal of the State of Georgia. Including the official Korean War logo, these certificates are signed by Gov. Brian Kemp and GDVS Commissioner Mike Roby.
