BASEBALL:
Mel Stottlemyre Jr. has been retained as the Miami Marlins’ pitching coach for 2020 after guiding a young staff that ranked 20th in the majors in ERA this year. The Marlins also retained first base coach Trey Hillman. He and Stottlemyre joined manager Don Mattingly’s staff this year. Third base coach Fredi Gonzalez, a former manager for the Atlanta Braves, was not retained.
TENNIS:
Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka says she intends to represent Japan at next year’s Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic Channel says Osaka, who plays under a Japanese flag in WTA events and in the Fed Cup, has told national broadcaster NHK she has started proceedings to choose Japanese citizenship.
SOCCER:
Brazil was held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal on Thursday in a friendly in Singapore that marked Neymar’s 100th match with the national team. Roberto Firmino opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a lob over the goalkeeper, but Famara Diedhiou equalized from the penalty spot just before the end of the first half. It was Brazil’s third consecutive match without a win.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
Seton Hall edged Villanova atop the Big East preseason conference poll released Thursday, ending the Wildcats’ five-year run as favorites. Xavier was third, with Marquette and Providence tied for fourth. Georgetown, Creighton, Butler, St. John’s and DePaul round out the poll.
PRO FOOTBALL:
Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan expects cornerback Jalen Ramsey to play Sunday. Khan told a financial news site, The Street, he had a“heart to heart” with the disgruntled defender earlier this week and said Ramsey is scheduled to play against New Orleans (4-1).
