■ Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo set to go to Turkey. The vice president and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were planning to meet Turkish officials today and press for a cease-fire. Robert C. O’Brien, the president’s new national security adviser, is planning to go as well. But there were conflicting reports from Turkey about whether Erdogan would meet with them. Erdogan told a reporter from the British broadcaster Sky News: “I am standing tall. I will not meet with them. They will meet with their counterparts. I will speak when Trump comes.”
■ Syrian forces roll into Kobani. The move on Wednesday blocked one path for the Turkish military to establish a “safe zone” free of Syrian Kurdish fighters along the frontier as part of its weekold offensive. The town was where the United States military and Kurdish fighters first united to defeat the Islamic State group four years ago, and it holds powerful symbolism for Syrian Kurds and their ambitions of self-rule.
■ Erdogan to travel to Russia for talks. The Turkish leader’s office says he will travel to Sochi, Russia, for talks Oct. 22 regarding Turkey’s offensive. Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Erdogan during a call on Tuesday, amid pressure on Turkey to halt its incursion.

Nearly all foreign aid workers have been evacuated because of security concerns, and there are fears that local staff could face reprisals either at the hands of Turks or Syrians.
