SOCCER:
Former England soccer star Paul Gascoigne has been cleared of sexually assaulting a woman on a train after he kissed her on the lips. A jury at Teesside Crown Court cleared the former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder of that offense, plus a less serious alternative charge of assault by beating which they were told to consider by the judge.
PRO BASKETBALL:
The New York Liberty will have a new home next year — Barclays Center. Team executives told the Associated Press on Thursday the Liberty will play all their home games at the Brooklyn arena that houses the Nets. The building was recently purchased by Liberty owner Joe Tsai, who also owns the Nets.
BOXING:
Boxer Patrick Day died four days after sustaining head injuries in a fight with Charles Conwell. Promoter Lou DiBella said Day died Wednesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was 27.
TENNIS:
Top-seeded Elina Svitolina lost her opening match at the Kremlin Cup on Thursday after having been a break up in the deciding set. Veronika Kudermetova beat the fourthranked Svitolina, who had a firstround bye, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 in their second-round match to set up a quarterfinal with either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or wild-card entry Varvara Gracheva.
TENNIS:
Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals of the European Open by beating Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 Thursday, while the three highest-seeded players were all eliminated. Murray couldn’t convert any of his first seven break points but finally broke Cuevas in the final game of the first set. He then saved four break points in the opening game of the second before breaking again for a 4-2 lead.
