THE HOT CORNER
PRO BASEBALL: The Pittsburgh Pirates said Frank Coonelly’s 12-year run as team president is over and his replacement will be introduced Monday. Coonelly helped oversee a brief renaissance that resulted in three straight playoff berths from 2013-15 but said he understood “change was necessary” following a secondhalf collapse in which the Pirates went 25-48 and fell to last place in the NL Central. The team fired manager Clint Hurdle on the final day of the regular season.
PRO SOCCER: The San Jose Earthquakes signed Major League Soccer all-time leading scorer Chris Wondolowski, 36, to a oneyear contract. He scored 15 goals in 2019.
PRO SOCCER: Players in the Spanish women’s league voted to go on strike after failing to reach a deal with clubs over working hours and minimum wages. The strike is expected to begin next month after legal requirements are met.
PRO SOCCER: Red Star Belgrade coach Vladan Milojevic thanked the club’s fans for finding a way to circumvent a ban from attending the Champions League match at Tottenham as part of a sanction for racist chanting from UEFA. Hundreds of Red Star fans found a way to get tickets in a home section at the London stadium and were singing from early in the game. Stadium security and police eventually surrounded the fans, who stayed throughout their team’s 5-0 loss Tuesday after officials determined the group was too large to eject.
PRO BASKETBALL: Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade will be a regular analyst for TNT’s studio coverage of the NBA on Tuesday nights alongside former Miami Heat teammate Shaquille O’Neal and Candace Parker this season. His agreement with WarnerMedia also includes other projects covering sports, lifestyles and entertainment across the company’s various platforms.
