NO.23 WAKE FOREST ROLLS TO RECORD ROUT

-

Jamie Newman returned from

injury to throw for three touchdowns and run for two more as No. 23 Wake Forest beat North Carolina State 44-10 on Saturday. Newman had missed one game

and part of another with a shoulder injury, and his status was uncertain for the long-running instate series. But Newman and the host Demon Deacons (7-1, 3-1 ACC) got off to a dominating start that had this one wrapped up early.

Wake Forest said the 34-point margin was its largest ever against an ACC opponent at BB&T Field, where the Demon Deacons began playing in September 1968.

Newman scored twice on first-quarter keepers, taking a moment to extend his arms to the

side in celebration as he crossed the goal line on a 20-yard run that started Wake Forest’s open

ing-period romp.

He also had the first of his three TD throws to Jack Freudenthal in the first quarter, with Wake Forest scoring touchdowns on its first three drives and taking a 24-0 lead early in the second.

Newman threw for 287 yards and ran for 30 more before checking out late in the third.

N.C. State (4-4, 1-3) never had an answer, with its defense unable to stop the Demon Deacons and its offense unable to sustain drives with first-time starting quarterback Devin Leary. Miami 27, (at) Florida State 10: Freshman Jarren Williams threw for a season-best 313 yards and two touchdowns as Miami won its third straight game against Florida State.

Williams connected with Dee Wiggins on a 56-yard touchdown and Jeff Thomas on a 39-yard score.

Cam Akers had 22 carries for 66 yards. He also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Alex Hornibrook. But the Seminoles managed just 31 rushing yards on 41 carries.

Deejay Dallas had 18 carries for 61 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown run for the Hurricanes (5-4, 3-3 ACC).

Freshman defensive end Gregory Rousseau had four of Miami’s season-high nine sacks. The Sem

inoles (4-5, 3-4) had never before allowed nine sacks in a game.

Miami has had an up-anddown season but secured a confidence-building win for Manny Diaz in his first year as head coach.

Florida State coach Willie Taggart falls to 0-5 in rivalry games, losing four of them by double digits. The Seminoles fell at Clem

son 45-14 on Oct. 12. (At) No. 16 Notre Dame 21,

Virginia Tech 20: Ian Book ran 7 yards for a touchdown with 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cap an 18-play, 87-yard drive, and No. 16 Notre Dame pulled out a victory against Virginia Tech.

The Fighting Irish (6-2) had committed three turnovers deep in Virginia Tech territory, including a fumble at the goal line that Divine Deablo returned for a 98-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14 with 9 seconds left in the first half. The Hokies (5-3) added a couple of field goals in the second half and the Irish missed one, leaving Notre Dame trailing by six with 3:19 remaining and the ball at its 13.

Book led a methodical drive, converting two fourth downs, including a fourth-and-10 from the Tech 33 for 26 yards to Chase Claypool that gave the Irish firstand-goal from the 7.

After two incomplete passes, Notre Dame caught Virginia Tech in a blitz. Book ran away from it and darted into the end zone. Jon

athan Doerer booted through the PAT for the lead, Kyle Hamilton picked off a long pass by Quincy Patterson around midfield to end the Hokies’ final possession and the Irish averted a two-game losing streak.

Book passed for 341 yards and two touchdowns. (At) No. 4 Clemson 59, Wofford 14: Trevor Lawrence accounted for four touchdowns, Travis Etienne ran for 212 yards

and two TDs and No. 4 Clemson won its 24th consecutive game, rolling over FCS foe Wofford.

Etienne, the reigning ACC player of the year, helped the Tigers (9-0) put the game away early with scoring runs of 47 and 86 yards in the game’s first 15:12. Clemson improved to 34-0 against FCS programs. It was the Tigers’

sixth straight win over Wofford

(5-3), which fell to 1-21 against FBS schools. Etienne became Clemson’s first

rusher with three 200-yard games in his career. He also surpassed

James Davis for Clemson’s career record for rushing TDs with 48.

Clemsonhasopened with nine straight wins for the fourth time in five seasons. It finished with a season-best 702 yards, the fourth time gaining 600 yards or more this year — a first in school history. Boston College 58, (at) Syra
