1 SOCCER:
Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti is at risk of losing his job after his players deserted a club-ordered emergency training camp. Napoli says it will defend its “economic, patrimonial, image and disciplinary rights” after the players refused to stay at the club’s training center following a 1-1 draw with Salzburg in the Champions League.
2 HORSE RACING:
The Breeders’ Cup named Drew Fleming as president and chief executive officer. The board of directors voted unanimously to appoint Fleming as the replacement for Craig Fravel, who quit after last weekend’s world championships at Santa Anita to join The Stronach Group, which owns several racetracks.
3 OLYMPICS:
USA Swimming named Catherine Kase as open water head coach for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Haley Anderson, Ashley Twichell and Jordan Wilimovsky earned Olympic berths with top-10 finishes in the 10-kilometer race at last summer’s world championships in South Korea, where Kase was the head coach.
4 BASKETBALL:
Canadian Olympic basketball star Eli Pasquale, 59, died of cancer. Pasquale led Canada to a fourth-place finish at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and sixth place at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He played in four world championships and two Pan American Games. He was inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
5 SUPER BOWL:
Authorities in Miami are launching an initiative aimed at curbing sex trafficking in the events surrounding February’s Super Bowl. Officials say sex trafficking is an increasing problem at large-scale events such as the Super Bowl that draw tens of thousands of people to a party atmosphere.
