TENNIS: France defeated host Australia for the Fed Cup title as Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia to beat Ashleigh Barty and Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-3 in the decisive doubles match at Perth Arena. French Open winner Barty’s remarkable season ended in disappoint­ment just one week after her $4.42 million triumph at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Devin Vassell scored 13 points and M.J. Walker added 12 as Florida State upset No. 6 Florida 6351 in Gainesvill­e, extending its series winning streak to six. The Seminoles (1-1) avoided their first 0-2 start since 2000 thanks to strong defense that forced the Gators (1-1) into 16 turnovers and a 14-for-50 shooting performanc­e, including 4 of 22 from 3-point range.

GOLF: Overnight leader Ai Suzuki shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 to win the Japan Classic in Shiga by three strokes for her first LPGA career victory. Suzuki carded her fifth birdie of the day on the par-5 18th hole at the Seta Golf Course to finish with a 17-under 199, three shots ahead of Hyo Joo Kim, who shot 66.

RUNNING: John Kipkorir Komen of Kenya held on to narrowly win the 37th Athens (Greece) Marathon. Komen, 42, finished in 2 hours, 16 minutes, 34 seconds, beating Rwanda’s Felicien Muhitira, 17 years his junior, by nine seconds. Greek runner Costas Gelaouzos finished third in 2:19:02. Greece’s Eleftheria Petroulaki won the women’s race in 2:39:00.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: The brother of Michigan State star Cassius Winston died after being struck by an Amtrak train in Albion, Mich., Saturday night. Scott Kipp, Albion’s Chief of Public Safety, confirmed Zachary Winston died after being hit by a westbound train. Zachary Winston, of Detroit, played basketball at Albion College.
