1 CONGO: A small plane carrying at least 17 passengers crashed shortly after takeoff Sunday in the city of Goma, killing at least 26 people, including people on the ground. The Dornier 228-200 was owned by private carrier Busy Bee. Plane crashes are frequent in the central African nation because of poor maintenanc­e and relaxed air safety standards. None of Congo’s commercial carriers are allowed to fly into European Union airspace because of safety concerns.

2 CALIFORNIA: A Philippine Airlines flight made an emergency landing Thursday after one of the engines on the Boeing 777 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Los Angeles Internatio­nal Airport. Officials said the issue was a “technical problem” with one of the engines, but it was not clear what caused the incident. There were no injuries.

3 NEW YORK: Pharmaceut­ical company Novartis has reached a deal to buy cholestero­l drugmaker The Medicines Co. for $9.7 billion. Novartis will pay $85 per share for the New Jersey biotech company, a sharp increase over The Medicine Co.’s Friday closing price of $68.55 per share.

4 SOUTH KOREA: K-pop star and TV celebrity Goo Hara, 28, was found dead at her home in Seoul on Sunday, police said. The cause of death wasn’t immediatel­y known, and police refused to provide further details. Goo made her debut in 2008 as a member of the girl group Kara, which had big followings in South Korea, Japan and other Asian countries. She later worked as a solo artist and appeared on many TV shows.

5 NEW YORK: Sixyears after “Frozen” kicked up a pop-culture blizzard, the sequel made an estimated $127 million debut domestical­ly and $350 million worldwide, a record for an animated movie released outside of summer. Time will tell if “Frozen 2” can match the $1.28 billion box office take of the original.
