1 COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Georgia’s Anthony Edwards was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performanc­e in the Maui Invitation­al. He averaged 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, two blocks, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals in three tournament games.

2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Washington head coach Chris Petersen unexpected­ly resigned Monday, with the Huskies coming off a 7-5 regular season and bound for a sixth straight bowl game under his leadership. He will coach the Huskies in the bowl game, his final game in charge of the program he helped grow back into national prominence. Then Washington will be turned over to defensive coordinato­r Jimmy Lake, who is being promoted and tasked with continuing the Huskies’ run of success over the past six seasons.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: 3

North Carolina State fired defensive coordinato­r Dave Huxtable after a four-win season, though firstyear AD Boo Corrigan is publicly backing head coach Dave Doeren. The Wolfpack closed the season with a 41-10 loss to rival North Carolina. N.C. State allowed 30.1 points and 398.9 yards per game this season. Also Monday, N.C. State quarterbac­k Matthew McKay said he has entered his name in the transfer portal.

PRO FOOTBALL: 4

Deshaun Watson threw three touchdown passes and had the first TD catch of his career as Houston beat New England 28-22 Sunday. Texans coach/former Patriots assistant Bill O’Brien got his first win in six tries vs. New England coach Bill Belichick. Watson had 234 yards passing and threw for TDs of 14, 13, and 35 yards as Houston (84) built a 21-3 lead against New England’s (10-2) defense.

OLYMPIC SURFING: 5

Carissa Moore of Honolulu and Caroline Marks of Melbourne Beach, Fla., qualified for the two spots on the U.S. women’s Olympic team Sunday in Honolua Bay, Hawaii.
