THE HOT CORNER
BOXING: Middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, four-division champion Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico, three-division champ Shane Mosley and women’s star Christy Martin have been elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. This was the first year that women were on the ballot, and Barbara Buttrick of England and Lucia Rijker of the Netherlands joined Martin in making history as the first female boxers elected.
OLYMPICS: The IOC moved next year’s Tokyo Olympic marathons and racewalks out of the Japanese capital to avoid the stifling heat and humidity. Now some swim bodies are asking that something similar be done with the distance venue in Tokyo Bay. Water temperatures in test events this summer were consistently near the danger level. Local organizers and the world governing body say they have no Plan B.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: North Carolina State promoted Tony Gibson to defensive coordinator and linebackers coach two days after the firing of Dave Huxtable as defensive coordinator. Gibson joined the Wolfpack in January to coach safeties while carrying the title of co-defensive coordinator as N.C. State moved to a 3-3-5 defensive alignment.
SOCCER: Oscar Pareja is the new coach of the Orlando City Lions. Pareja, 51, returns to MLS following a stint with Club Tijuana of Liga MX. He previously coached FC Dallas, leading the club to a 78-49-41 record and making the postseason four of five seasons before departing in 2018.
PARALYMPICS: The Boston Marathon will serve as qualifying for the 2020 Paralympics. The top two American men and women who meet the qualifying standards in the arm or vision impairment classifications will be nominated to the U.S. team for the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
