1 Typhoon hits: An intensifyi­ng storm struck the Philippine­s on Christmas Eve, disrupting holiday travel plans in Asia’s largest Catholic nation. Typhoon Phanfone, called Ursula locally and upgraded from a tropical storm, hit the central Philippine­s on Tuesday, stranding thousands of travelers and prompting authoritie­s to advise residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to leave their homes.

2 Fall in bathroom: Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, 64, was taken to a hospital in Brasilia after falling in the bathroom of the presidenti­al palace on Monday evening, according to the presidency. He was submitted for a head tomography and no alteration­s were found, according to a statement from the presidenti­al office.

3 Oil production: Saudi Arabia and Kuwait agreed to resume oil production in a shared border region more than four years after halting output. Their agreement allows for“the resumption of oil production from the joint fields,” the Saudi energy ministry said on Twitter. The oil fields in the socalled neutral zone can produce as much as 500,000 barrels a day.

4 Designer dies: Emanuel Ungaro, whose merging of attentiong­etting colors and patterns with sleek lines made him one of the most talked-about fashion designers in Paris beginning in the 1960s and served as the foundation for the fashion house that still bears his name, died in Paris. He was 86. No cause was given.

5 Ships attacked: Pirates attacked five ships over four days in one of the world’s busiest shipping channels, including two separate attempts on Monday, the Straits Times reported. There have been 29 piracy incidents in the Singapore Strait so far in 2019, the Straits Times said.
