Buyer’s Edge Where can I fifind it?

- By Sabine Morrow

Q: I have a couple of my aunt’s cocktail dresses from the 1950s that are in fairly good condition. I have no use for the dresses, but I don’t want to throw them away. With so many movies being made in the Atlanta area, is there an antique clothing store or some such place where

I could donate the dresses? Thank you. — Barbara Kelly, email

A: Barbara, I found the ideal solution for you. You can put your aunt’s dresses in the capable hands of Craig Logan White, who restores and cares for vintage clothing at the Southeast Costume Company, 2333 Defoor Hills Road, Atlanta, 678973-2632. Check out the 6,000-square-foot warehouse at southeastcostume.com. If you leave your contact information with Craig, he’ll make sure to let you when and where those dresses are worn. For instance, he recently had a light blue sweater set from the 1950s used in “Watchmen” on HBO.

Q: I enjoy reading your Sunday AJC column. Is there a local company selling boxes for movers and for different sized artworks as well as boxes in general? — Judi B., email

A: For more than 50 years, family-owned and -run Service Box and Tape, 2065 Liddell Drive, Atlanta, 404-874-0461, has been offering the public and businesses a wide range of moving supplies, including every imaginable type of corrugated box. You can fifind fifile boxes with lids, special boxes for guitars, computers and even mattresses. The store also stocks telescoping flflat boxes for large pieces of artwork. Don’t miss the generous stock of misprints and overruns, which offer substantial savings — from 50% to 75% – over traditional boxes. You’ll also fifind strapping tape, bubble wrap, stretch wrap, foam rolls and biodegradable peanuts.

Q: I have looked online and in grocery stores but cannot fifind pickled artichokes. Can you help us fifind them? They are not marinated artichokes. Pickled artichokes are generally a Lowcountry item from Charleston as well as other South Carolina coastal cities. Thank you. — Anne H. Palmer, Decatur

A: Jerusalem artichokes turned into pickles or relish, a Lowcountry staple, also are known as sunchokes. While I didn’t spot them locally, I did fifind hand-packed artichoke pickles online from South Carolina- based Lowcountryproduce.com. A 16-ounce jar sells for $8.50. Along with assorted pickles, chutney, relishes and a beet chow chow spiked with horseradish, the company offers a slew of specialty soups ranging from green tomato to spicy peach gazpacho. If you have a sweet tooth, you might take a look at some of the unusual pairings that include peach mint, ginger-pear and strawberry- pepper preserves, and blackberry lemon marmalade. Lowcountry Produce also turns out sweet potato butter.
