1 SOCCER: Veteran Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda is joining Brazilian club Botafogo. The 33-year-old former Japan international made the announcement on his social media accounts Friday. He is reportedly signing on a free transfer until the end of 2020.
2 LEGAL: A former Chicago White Sox minor leaguer who went on to coach a South Dakota youth team after his playing career ended has been charged with sexually assaulting a child and possession child pornography. Juan Thomas Jr., a first-baseman and right fielder who rose as high as Triple-A, was charged in Lincoln County, South Dakota, with one count of raping a child younger than 13 and 10 counts of child porn possession. Thomas, 48, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
3 MARATHON: Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge was named to Kenya’s team on Friday to defend his title at this year’s Tokyo Games. Kipchoge, who became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours in an unofficial event in October, is one of three men on the team. Kipchoge is also the world-record holder with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute, 39 seconds set in Berlin in 2018.
4 WEIGHTLIFTING: Investigator Richard McLaren will lead an inquiry into alleged corruption in weightlifting under the sport’s longtime leader, Tamas Ajan. McLaren’s firm was appointed by the International Weightlifting Federation executive board to lead a 90-day investigation, the governing body said Friday.
5 COLLEGE BASKETBALL: North Florida looks to extend visiting Kennesaw State’s conference losing streak to 10 games today. Kennesaw State’s last Atlantic Sun win came against the Stetson Hatters 83-82 on March 1, 2019. North Florida is coming off a 7865 win at home over Stetson on Thursday.
