THE HOT CORNER

-

1 PRO BASEBALL: Oakland A’s pitcher Mike Fiers received a largely warm reception from fans in his first spring game since his comments helped expose the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal during the offseason. “Oakland’s going to support us no matter what,” the former Astro said after throwing two perfect innings against San Francisco in Mesa, Ariz. The 34-year-old is expected to have a prominent role with the A’s this season.

2 PRO BASEBALL: The Boston Red Sox placed 2B Dustin Pedroia on the 60-day injured list, further putting in doubt whether the former AL MVP will play again. The 36-year-old has played just nine games over the last two seasons. The four-time All-Star has spent the time trying to recover from an injury sustained when Baltimore’s Manny Machado slid spikes-high into his left knee in May 2017. Pedroia has two years and $25 million remaining on his contract.

3 PRO SOCCER: Bruno Fernandes coolly rolled in a penalty for his first goal with Manchester United, setting his new team on its way to a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Watford in the Premier League on Sunday. Anthony Martial also netted, for the third straight game, and teenager Mason Greenwood added a brilliant third goal as United climbed above Tottenham and Sheffield United into fifth in the standings. That is currently a Champions League qualification place following Manchester City’s recent two-season ban from European competitions by UEFA,

4 PRO SOCCER: Real Madrid said Belgian forward Eden Hazard has fractured his right lower leg, putting him in danger of missing the rest of the season. Hazard sustained the injury during Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Levante, which was just his second match since recovering from a fracture in the same area of his leg. Hazard missed almost three months due to his previous injury.
