Gerrymandering helps keep U.S. divided
U.S. elections are supposed to reflect the will of the people, not politicians. In much of the country, politicians manipulate voting maps to keep themselves and their party in power. Let’s rewrite the rules so that districts reflect our communities and hold elected officials accountable. Gerrymandering is a key reason our nation is so politically divided. By making a district overwhelmingly Republican or Democrat, politicians who dwell in the swamp protect themselves and radicalize politics. There is no need to appeal to the middle, just your base. Georgia voters deserve fair, impartial maps where everyone’s vote is truly counted and voice heard. Our democracy depends on it. Tell your legislator you want standards, transparency and citizens’ input when redistricting is done after the 2020 census. PEGGY PERKINS, WINDER vate plane travel was something I did not want to give up, so I bought a fractional share of a turboprop. Not once during the entire battle to raise over $400 million to save Grady Memorial Hospital did anyone criticize my use of a private plane. There were protests, and I got death threats but never an attack on my lifestyle. We all just worked our differences out.
Did I miss something in my country? Is there now something wrong with working hard and enjoying the benefits of your success? Does being successful mean you forget where you started, and how you lived?
It darn sure has not for Ada Lee and me! PETE CORRELL, ATLANTA
