GUIDE TO GEORGIA’S NEW VOTING SYSTEM

Early voting has started across Georgia, launching a new statewide voting system. Every in-person voter will use touch screens attached to printers to create a paper ballot. Here’s a step-by-step look at Georgia’s new voting process:

-

STEP 1 Before you go

Find voting locations and verify your registration online at mvp.sos.ga.gov. State law requires photo ID – such as a Georgia driver’s license, U.S. passport or government employee ID – when voting in person.

STEP 2 Check in

Hand your photo ID to a poll worker, who will check you in on a tablet computer called a Poll Pad. It will scan your ID and pull up your voter registration. Sign your name on the Poll Pad, and a poll worker will hand you a green voter card.

STEP 3 Pick your candidates

Walk to a touch screen. Insert your white voter card, arrow-side up. Use your finger to select the candidates you want to vote for. One race will be displayed at a time. Review your selections. When ready, push “Print.”

STEP 4 Review paper ballot

A printer will create a paper ballot. Review your choices to make sure they’re accurate. If you want to make any changes, ask a poll worker to start over. The paper ballot includes a QR code that encodes your votes in a computer-readable format. The ballot also lists your choices in human-readable text. When you’re ready, carry your ballot and voter card to a black ballot box.

STEP 5 Cast your ballot

A poll worker will be stationed at the ballot box, about the size of a large garbage container. The ballot scanner is attached to the top of the ballot box. Insert your ballot into the scanner. Ballots can be inserted text up, text down, forward or backward. A small screen will display the message “Ballot successfully cast.”

STEP 6 Watch for results

Your ballot will be deposited into the locked ballot box, where it could be retrieved for recounts or audits. Voters must insert their ballots into the ballot box to be counted. Collect your“I’m a Georgia voter”sticker and wait for results to come in after the March 24 presidential primary.
