1 OLYMPICS: The Greek Olympic committee suspended the rest of its torch relay Friday because of the “unexpectedly large crowd” that gathered to watch despite repeated requests for the public to stay away to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
2 SOCCER: Men’s Olympic qualifying was suspended Friday in soccer’s North and Central American and Caribbean region because of the coronavirus. The U.S. under-23 team already was in Guadalajara, Mexico, where it had been scheduled to play group stage matches against Costa Rica on Friday, the Dominican Republic three days later and Mexico on March 26.
3 AUTO RACING: The Bahrain and Vietnam Grand Prix races were postponed Friday because of the coronavirus outbreak, the third and fourth races of the Formula One season to be called off. Bahrain was scheduled for next week — at an empty track — and the inaugural Vietnamese GP in Hanoi on April 5.
4 OBITUARY: Dana Zatopkova, an Olympic javelin champion and the wife of running great Emil Zatopek, has died. She was 97. The Czech Olympic Committee said Zatopkova died Friday at Prague’s military hospital. No details about the cause of death were immediately given.
5 PRO BASKETBALL: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Thursday night the league’s hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic will likely last at least a month, or roughly what would have been the remainder of an uninterrupted regular season. “What we determined today is that this hiatus will be, most likely, at least 30 days,“Silver said on TNT’s “Inside The NBA“while making his first public comments since the league suspended play. Later, in an open letter to NBA fans, Silver said“we intend to resume the season, if and when it becomes safe for all concerned.“
